Hey MayheM! How effective do you think the rubber guard is in MMA... I have seen a couple fighters establish it, but no luck for them in making anything happen.

I didn't think Eddie Bravo did MMA. I thought he is a Strickly grappling/BJJ guy.

Eddie doesn't do MMA, but he does test out his moves in the classroom with students who are training for MMA, with gloves on, etc.
Who have you seen use the rubber guard? I've seen a couple fighters kind of struggle for something they THINK is rubber guard, but I haven't seen anyone other than Gerald Strebendt really using Eddie's rubber guard stuff in the Octagon. Tait Fletcher tried to use it a little bit in WEC, but was crushed against the fence at that particular moment in the fight, so was unable to maneuver.

I couldn't tell you exactly who I saw try the rubber guard... but (to narrow it down a bit) I can safely say it was in either UFC or Pride. Eddie is the creator of the Rubber Guard - this much I know. I also know that he has never competed in MMA. I'm asking MayheM because his BJJ is similar to Eddies from what I have seen.

I train with Eddie, and have since he opened his school, that's why I'm helping answer the question.
I haven't seen anyone in UFC other than Gerald Strebendt use stuff that Eddie has taught. Just because someone grabs at their ankle when they're in the guard doesn't mean they know anything about rubber guard.

Genki did it against Kid in his guard to prevent Kid from putting space between the two. pretty effective in that situation

Ringgirl,
I won't disagree with you there... there probably aren't many fighters who can use it well.

can someone explain to me the purpose of the rubber guard other than just preventing the opponent from gaining leverage. And does anyone know where I can see a video of what a rubber guard looks like when done correctly?

Austin -- you can buy Eddie Bravo's book, 'Jiu Jitsu Unleashed' and learn all about it. I think it's around $12-15 and has tons and tons of moves in it. It's available at Amazon and also major bookstores. Rubber guard is a particular position, but from that position there are setups for a lot of different moves and submissions.

Genki used it well against Kid so Kid couldn't posture up in Genki's guard
