According to UFC's official site:
"Throughout UFC history, there have been many groundbreaking announcements, moments that have both stunned and thrilled fight fans. But there's never been anything like this.On Monday, January 16th, during the Spike TV broadcast of Ultimate Fight Night 3, the UFC will raise the bar once again by announcing the biggest news in the organization's history, something that will stun the world of mixed martial arts."
My hypotheticals in order: 1. They will announce the first ever UFC event sanctioned in California at the Pond or Staples. 2. Some sort of champion vs champion card between Pride and the UFC. 3. They are bringing Rampage and CroCop to the UFC. 4. Dana just saved a bunch of money on his car insurance.

How about bringing the lightweights back? I've been hearing a lot about this and I think they'll do it sometime in the near future, but it doesn't seem like the "groundbreaking" announcement that they are making this up to be. I mean, they've already had a LW division and every other organization out there right now has one too. It's just something the UFC needs to do.
And for the record, UFC 59 is pretty much confirmed for being somewhere in SoCal. Rampage and Cro-Cop in the UFC would be great, and not that unlikely. And Champion vs. Champion card? I wish. And although I'd love to see Mayhem in the UFC again, I like him right where he's at here in Hawaii. What can I say, I'm selfish.
My guess would be that there will be some weekly live fights on Spike or something like that, sort of like a Friday Night Fights. Or it could just be that there will be an event every month. Who knows, I hope it's good though.

I was just on MMAweekly and found this. MMAWeekly.com your industry leader in MMA News has the inside track of at least one of the big announcements of the UFC. It appears there may not be just one announcement, but there may be more... like the last UFC pay per view that featured BJ Penn coming back to the UFC, (which you heard first on MMAWeekly.com), Tito facing Ken Shamrock on the Ultimate Fighter, plus Frank Mir facing Andrei Arlovski.
MMAWeekly.com has learned there is a potential for three substantial announcements at this show. It is unknown if there will be one announcement tonight or three.
1. MMAWeekly.com has learned that Royce Gracie has been seen in Las Vegas today and according to a few Gracie supporters, he is all set to face Matt Hughes in the UFC main event in May. It looks as though the match will take place at the 175 pound weight class in a non-title fight. According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission rules, Gracie will not be able to fight with a gi, a non-title fight would be three five minute rounds, which means Gracie would not be able to institute any special rules like he received in his last fight in K1 because of the Nevada State rules.
2. MMAWeekly.com has had various reports confirmed that the UFC will indeed debut for the first time in California. This event will most likely take place at Staples Center most likely in April. Some final negotiations are taking place, so look for an official announcement soon.
3. There is talk that the 155-pound division will make a comeback but it seems that it would happen no earlier than June. Still the UFC could have a tournament style format to crown a new champion spread out over a few shows or they could just bring two fighters back to fight for the title. While the tournament style is something the UFC said they wouldn't do, they could have a series of single fights spread out over a period of time to create a 155-pound champion.
Of the three things listed above, the fight between Gracie and Hughes seems like the sure fire bet for tonight. It doesn't mean there won't be more things coming, but from the reports that MMAWeekly has obtained, look for the fight to be the main announcement tonight.
On a much lighter note, MMAWeekly's Jeff Cain gives us 10 Announcements that WON'T be made tonight...Here's Jeff Cain's top ten list of things the big announcement should actually be:
10. The UFC is suing the federal government/transportation department for using the octagon as a stop sign.
9. Resulting from Dana White revealing Chuck Liddell's 2006 projected earnings, the UFC will announce their first female fight. . . Juliette Lewis vs Willa Ford.
8. In an out of court settlement with the W.F.C, WFC match maker Shannon 'The Cannon' Ritch will replace UFC's Joe Silva effective immediately as matchmaker.
7. The UFC is bringing back the lightweights and Joe Riggs will make his debut at 155lbs..
6. In a stunning and unbelievable announcement, UFC president Dana White is expected to promise he will not drop one 'F' bomb during the entire third season of 'The Ultimate Fighter. "Do you want to be a freakin fighter."
5. UFC 58 and 59 will be in California with a long term plan of holding UFC 69 in San Francisco.
4. No matter what the big announcement is tonight, expect two fighters to receive Hummers
3. The big announcement tonight is actually the return of Matt Lindland to the UFC. Lindland then wears a sportsbook.com t-shirt to the Octagon.
2. Due to demographic data collected from The Ultimate Fighter TV Show, for the first time in fighting history, there will be ring card boys.
1. In a stunning development, Water will not be allowed near the Octagon. Water's credentials have been denied. Fighters will only be allowed to drink Xyience in between rounds.

Biggest letdown of an announcement in the organization's history should've been a title. Huge build up with a very unexciting result. It was like "Yay, I guess." I mean, it's cool Royce is fighting in the UFC again but where is the significance? Matt should be fighting BJ, GSP, and god forbid Diego Sanchez in 2006. These are fights people want to see. Royce hasn't done a lot recently except pull out a draw against Hideo Tokoro who is listed at 5'7 143. That's my wife's size. Also it was 2 rounds of 5 minutes each. Before that he fought Akebono who is on the other side of the scale. He's 6'8" and close to 500lbs and 0-2 in mma. He had no business being in the ring with a submission expert fighting by his rules.
Now he is going to fight Hughes who not only has a legendary sprawl but is probably the strongest fighter pound for pound in the world. Ever. Also, he is at the top of his game right now. There is always the outside chance Royce will catch him in a submission. But there was also a chance Ken would get Tito in an ankle lock. *crickets* Granted, it's good for mma and the UFC inparticular but I was expecting an actual mind blowing announcement. Royce coming back is pretty cool. Personally Ken and Tito as coaches for TUF 3 was way more of a shock.
On a personal note if you watched the UFC as a fan in late 1993 you either fell in love with Royce or Ken Shamrock when you saw your first UFC. I instantly loved Ken's fighting style. There are some fighters you don't like for your own reasons. Mine happen to be Royce, Diego, Tito, and Dan Severn.

It's not even for a title. I don't see how the biggest announcement in UFC history doesn't include one of the titles. I guess they are building it as "The best champ ever match" but since Royce is past his prime (even Hughes said that) it really won't prove anything when Hughes beats him.

The second biggest let down of the night. The first, of course, being the ending to War of the Worlds.

The second biggest let down of the night. The first, of course, being the ending to War of the Worlds. Now that is pretty darn funny! I dont care who you are! Very big let down. Gracie doesnt do well against fast powerful guys. This isnt even gonna be fun to watch. Hughes is gonna slam the shiz out of him and smash his head in. Its gonna be like watching tyson in his prime fight the current ali. You could even see it in matts eyes, he was like um ok?

Yea, this is stupid. Why would Gracie even sign to this fight?! He has NOTHING to prove or gain if he wins (Which I highly doubt). I would rather see a rematch between bj penn and hughes. I gotta agree with ryan in that the ending of "War of the Worlds" was pretty much the worst 10minutes of my life.

It was kind of a let down that thats all the announcment was, BUT, its a big fight, Gracie is a legend but I think hes going to be owned by Hughes. They should have just put the Mayhem vs Lawler on the fight card so I can watch it on PPV, I would have rather watched that fight!
