This could be a question for anyone who know's the answer, but what is the difference in skill level to get into Pride Vs the UFC? Also, which one pays the fighters more? I've been curious about this for a while after watching "The Smashing Machine" with Mark Kerr.

UFC sucks for payouts. Your gonna see well known guys getting 5k to fight 5k more if they win. That is rediculous! Pride seems to pay alot more, but as far as the skill level? Some ufc guys do real well there, and some dont. You do see a lot of japanasian whatever guys there that wouldnt come here to fight, so it definitly has the top guys in it. UFC is run more like a business, dana wants to see the favorites stay the favorites so he can rake in money. He isnt about having the best fighters he can, which in some cases I can agree with. Just when a half rate pro boxer with less chance of an injury can make thousands basically his 3rd espn telecast fight, and a top UFC guy being televised on PPV might walk away with 5k, something is really really messed up. Back in the day maybe this would be OK, but UFC and MMA is hugely popular now. The time is here, and the heros of the game should be getting in the MILLIONS for big fights. They sure are spending that on ADVERTISING for the events/fights! Shows like Ultimate fighter on spiketv are just raking in the money, maybe a few K's kicked back to the fighters would be nice.

Wow, that's crazy!! 5K for a fight? I just watched on UFC 53 where Evan Tanner gets his face smashed in, and the guy definetely wasn't a good looking guy to begin with. I hope he made more than 5K for that. You would think with all the money UFC is making, they would pay a lot more than that. Anyone with any further info would be great. Thanks!

I can understand what the UFC is doing by paying only the superstars the big money..it makes these new "the ultimate fighter" guys really hungry to win and succeed and the guys on the undercard who think that they should be in the big time strive that much harder...pity they get such a beat down on the way...well,some of em anyway

I believe Pride pys more but UFC pays more than 5k to fight. THey get a 6 figure contract maybe 50k to fight plus bonus if they win. THe skill level depends on which weight class. Welterweight i think UFC would odminate. Middleweight would be back and forth between Henderson and Franklin and possible Bustamante. As for lighheavweight and HEavyweight Pride is stacked in those 2 divisions. I know Rampage whooped up on Liddell. and Fedor, Cro-cop and nog are jsut too much for the dwindling UFC heavyweights. So it all depends on your outlook

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Another question, how do you think that Mark Kerr in his prime would match up against the heavyweights of UFC today?

Read post above this- NEver doubt MISCHIEF he knows all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you think thats bad you only get 500 bucks if you win for the first few fights in KOTC. Yet ive seen boxers get 1k for their first pro fight.

Im shocked, that doesnt happen easily. Beginning to not like the UFC so much. Like striker I would much rather fight in Japan, money isnt everything(if your not underpaid) How can UFC ensure loyalty if they do this. Dont be cheap. It takes money to make money. Next thing all the good fighters go, fans follow, merchandise drops, ratings drop, no more TV show, everyone is all teary-eyed and sad and remembers the good times. See how this can suck

The 6 figure contract for the TUF champs is over a couple years, well atleast according to Tito Ortiz, he may be right. And Pride doesn't have a Welterweight division so naturally UFC's would destroy Pride. In terms of skill level, I really wouldn't say there is too big of a difference between UFC and Pride, you really do get a lot of Japanese "cans" fighting there and seem more like stat boosters for marketable fighers than anything.
In terms of skill in any one specific martial art I would have to give it to Pride. You get more olympians in Judo, Wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, and Tae Kwon do there, but as we all know, it doesn't mean that you get the best MMA atheletes.
However, there is much more competition for top spots in Pride than there is in the UFC, Fedor's hold over the HW title at Pride gets much more competition than say Andrei Arlovski's hold over the HW title for the UFC. Vanderlei has a lot of competition, but probably won't be dethroned anytime soon because Arona probably had the best chance of doing it (lost in an arguable decision) outside of Shogun Rua.
The biggest difference is probably not the skill level itself but the size of the talent pool the organizations are drawing from. Pride draws top talent from around the world where as in the UFC you're pretty much stuck to the US and Canada.
